    Locus equation: Assumption and dependencies.Richard E. Pastore & Edward J. Crawley - 1998 - Behavioral and Brain Sciences 21 (2):278-279.
Evaluating the current locus equation under ideal conditions identifies important and unexpected parameter dependencies. Locus equation (LE) utility, either as a valid laboratory tool or possible invariant cue, depends on stringent specification of critical parameters and rigorous empirical testing.

    Reductionism or holism? The two faces of biology.Joseph A. Walker & Thomas E. Cloete - 2023 - HTS Theological Studies 79 (3):7.
Reductionism and holism, that is, antireductionism, are two of the prevailing paradigms within the philosophy of biology. Reductionists strive to understand biological phenomena by reducing them to a series of levels of complexity with each lower level forming the foundation for the subsequent level, by mapping such biological phenomena inasmuch as possible to the principal phenomena within the fundamental sciences of chemistry and physics. In this way, complex phenomena can be reduced to assemblages of more elementary explananda. Holism, in counterpart, (...)

    Religion och metafysik. [REVIEW]E. J. A. - 1966 - Review of Metaphysics 20 (2):369-369.
A critical examination of the religious theories of Axel Hägerström and Anders Nygren, their respective disciples, Martin Fries and Ragnar Bring, and the critical literature on the two main figures. Hemberg's study focuses on the questions: whether all reality must be referred to spatial-temporal experience; the status of metaphysics; and the nature of religious experience. The religious theories of Hägerström and Nygren are of considerable philosophical interest although, for primarily linguistic reasons, their influence outside Sweden has remained slight. Despite the (...)

    The Anti-Christianity of Kierkegaard. [REVIEW]E. J. A. - 1965 - Review of Metaphysics 19 (1):151-151.
Garelick, in this closely-argued presentation, maintains that although Johannes Climacus defines Christianity as irrational, he presents it not as an end in itself but as a means to the higher end, eternal happiness, "a choice which a reasonable man could accept." Climacus thus becomes "anti-Christian" in a twofold manner, by making Christianity reasonable and by making it a means. This book can be considered a welcome addition to Kierkegaard scholarship, even though the arguments for the final conclusion are not quite (...)

    The Concept of Irony. [REVIEW]E. J. A. - 1966 - Review of Metaphysics 20 (2):370-370.
With the appearance of this book, Kierkegaard's dissertation for the master's degree, all major works of Kierkegaard are available in English. Capel's translation is felicitous, and his "historical introduction" and notes are genuinely helpful. The Concept of Irony is itself an exercise in irony, and most problems of interpretation relate to that point. Although the book is of considerable independent interest, sprinkled with wit and insight, it is likely that it will be used mainly by scholars tracing the origins of (...)

    Language, Meaning and Persons. [REVIEW]A. E. S. - 1964 - Review of Metaphysics 18 (1):170-171.
A continuation of some of the lines of thought developed in his earlier work, Concerning Human Understanding. Here Banerjee tries to make out a case for metaphysics by showing philosophy as an independent discipline concerned with the analysis of the human situation. Of special interest is the author's effort to understand language in terms of the person and his concern with the nature of man as a being who is with others. Many insights of phenomenological philosophy are mirrored in this (...)

Metaphor and moral experience.A. E. Denham - 2000 - New York: Oxford University Press.
Alison Denham examines the ways in which our engagement with literary art, and metaphorical discourse in particular, informs our moral beliefs. She considers to what extent moral and metaphorical discourses are capable of truth or falsehood, warrant or justification, and how it is that we understand these discourses. This vital new study offers a fresh view of the nature of the moral and the metaphorical, and the relations between art and morality.
